The Dream of a Self-Sustaining Food System

The Foodshed Alliance grew out of a dream of a self-sustaining rural economy — based on the production and sale of local foods – for the Ridge & Valley of Warren and Sussex Counties — to preserve this beautiful land of fertile soils, pristine streams, wooded hills, dairy and crop farms, and historic villages. The dream was launched in 2001 through a grant from the Educational Foundation of America to Genesis Farm. Subsequent grants were obtained from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation.

In 2010, the Foodshed Alliance incorporated as an independent non-profit New Jersey corporation. Its Board of Trustees works hard to further the mission, along with its staff. It has continued to receive generous support from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New Jersey Highlands Coalition and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, as well as from individuals, families, farms, businesses and organizations throughout the communities it serves. It works closely with the Ridge and Valley Conservancy and other organizations.
