Growing Your Local Agricultural Economy

March 18, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

The Foodshed Alliance is a co-presenter at this workshop at the 20th Annual NJ Land Conservation Rally.

LTN-for-NJCF_Revised_10-21-15-Change-1lg_000Taxpayers have made a substantial investment in the permanent preservation of farmland and open space to ensure that the best lands are available for food production and agricultural ventures. Supporting small and emerging agricultural producers in rural areas ensures the viability of farmland in which the public has already invested resources and keeps unpreserved lands firmly situated in the agricultural economy.

Monmouth County recently received a USDA grant to develop its Grown in Monmouth project. The project will inventory what is currently produced in rural sections of the county, propose marketing strategies to overcome challenges and gaps that are identified, and foster business relationships among farmers and local and institutional buyers.

The Foodshed Alliance has published the Regional Foodshed Resiliency Plan for northern New Jersey that identifies key issues, such as the need to “grow” new farmers, create a food hub in New Jersey, and create a statewide food policy council.

Presenters: Harriet Honigfeld, Monmouth County; Kendrya Close, Executive Director, Foodshed Alliance.

The 20th Annual NJ Land Conservation Rally is being held at the  Wyndham Garden Hotel in Trenton, NJ. You must register for the conference to attend this workshop. For registration information, click here.
