Empowering Agriculture: Montclair State University’s Green Teams Summer Internship Innovates with Precision Tools

This summer, Montclair State University’s PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies Green Teams embarked on a groundbreaking project with the Foodshed Alliance’s SAgE Farm. Their mission? To design a high-tech precision agriculture tool aimed at transforming the way farmers monitor and manage their crops.

The internship provided a unique opportunity for students to apply their skills to real-world agricultural challenges. Tess Mullen, SAgE Farm Coordinator, expressed her enthusiasm, stating,

“I am so honored to have gotten to work with this amazing Green Teams with PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University this summer. Our team focused on creating innovative, technologically advanced solutions for improving agriculture systems. Their project will make farmers’ lives easier by creating a precise tool to monitor soils for temperature, humidity, moisture, and alert for drought conditions. Each of these students has been such a pleasure to work with and learn from this summer. Lena Ouellette, MskominKwe Recollet, Donovan Collazo, Blake Crawford, and Chukwuemeka Okwuka, I am so grateful to have gotten to be a part of your journeys! Onward and upward, friends.”

The tool designed by the Green Teams is set to revolutionize precision agriculture by providing farmers with detailed, real-time data on soil conditions. This technological advancement will not only help in optimizing crop management but also play a crucial role in anticipating and mitigating drought conditions.

Tess’ appreciation extends beyond the Green Teams, highlighting the invaluable support from Amy Tuininga, Program Director for the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies, and her entire team.

“Thank you for your service to our Foodshed Alliance farming community; and for the dedicated support to programs like ours while providing such an incredible learning experience for all involved!”
The collaboration between Montclair State University’s PSEG ISS Green Teams and the Foodshed Alliance underscores the power of innovation and education in advancing sustainable agriculture. With such partnerships, the future of farming looks brighter and more resilient. The project focused on the Sussex County Community College Student Farm, and Erin Shroll, SCCC Agriculture Program Supervisor, was integral in helping the students understand the challenges that farmers are facing today, and how to shape their project goals to help.
Here’s to the Green Teams’ outstanding contributions and the ongoing commitment to making a positive impact in agriculture.
