Paulins Kill River Featured in the NJ Herald: Advocating for Wild and Scenic River Status
The Paulins Kill River, a 42-mile gem flowing through Sussex and Warren counties, is gaining recognition! The New Jersey Herald recently highlighted efforts to secure Wild and Scenic River status for the Paulins Kill—a designation that would celebrate its natural beauty, ecological value, and recreational opportunities.
What is Wild and Scenic?
The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act protects free-flowing rivers while preserving their unique qualities, including water quality, recreation, and habitats for wildlife. As noted by the NJ Herald, this designation does not affect private property rights or existing land-use ordinances.
Instead, it offers:
- Federal funding to enhance water quality, recreation access, and habitat preservation.
- Recognition of the river as a vital ecological and recreational resource.
- Support for sustainable tourism and economic development.
Momentum is Building
With resolutions passed in Blairstown, Hardwick, and Knowlton, the movement is gaining traction. The Foodshed Alliance’s Paulins Kill Watershed Program is working to champion this initiative, collaborating with municipalities to protect this natural treasure for future generations.
